INTRODUCTION
The 5th European Summer School in Information Retrieval (ESSIR 2005) was held in Dublin, Ireland, hosted by
Centre for Digital Video Processing, part of the
Adaptive Information Cluster
at Dublin City University.
This five-day school (Monday to Friday) will give participants a grounding in the core subjects of IR -
architectures, algorithms, formal theoretical models of IR, and evaluation - as well as covering some of the current
"hot" topics such as retrieving from multimedia document collections, and retrieving over wide
area networks such as the Internet and the Web.
The target audience of the Summer School are advanced undergraduate students, PhD students, post-doctoral researchers
and academic and industrial researchers and developers. The Summer School will last one week (Monday to Friday) and the
programme will include lectures from leading researchers in their fields, demonstrations and panels.

HISTORY OF ESSIR
ESSIR 2005 will be the 5th European School in Information Retrieval. The first one, ESSIR'90 was
organised by the University of
Padova (Prof. Maristella Agosti) and was held in Bressanone, Italy, in 1990. The 2nd ESSIR
(ESSIR'95) was organised by the University
of Glasgow (Prof. Keith van Rijsbergen) and held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1995, in conjunction with the BCS Colloquium in
Information Retrieval, an IRIDES project meeting, and the final MIRO workshop. The 3rd ESSIR
(ESSIR 2000) was organised by Dr.
Gabriela Pasi, Prof. Maristella Agosti and Prof. Fabio Crestani, and took place in Varenna, Italy, in 2000.
The 4th ESSIR (ESSIR 2003) was
held in Aussois, France and
organised by Prof. Yves Chiaramella and Prof. Catherine Berrut. The 5th ESSIR
(ESSIR 2005) was held in Dublin, Ireland,
organised by Prof. Alan F. Smeaton, Dublin City University.
The 6th ESSIR
(ESSIR 2007) will be held in Glasgow University, Scotland.
