Físchlár-News Stories has been configured for:
A small software plug-in (Oracle Video Player) needs to be installed for video playback - see 'Installing Video Player Plug-in' section below.
| Registration & Logging-in | ||
Every user of the system first has to register. When you visit
Físchlár-News Stories site (http://www.fischlar.dcu.ie/news/), the page will ask you to either
register (first time only) or log in (once registered) as the screen shot on the right shows.
For registration, click the "Register..." button, and on the following page type
in your full email address then click "Register" button. After a few seconds, you will have
received an email from the system, confirming your registration with a password - so check your
email and note the password in this email. Once you have this, you can log in to the system
by typing in your full email address and password on the Login page. Once you are logged in, you can
change your password into something more memorable - by clicking on "My Account" button on
the bottom right.

| Installing Video Player Plug-in | ||
|
If you want to access on your own PC, you require the installation of a
small piece of software that will play the video over the network… a task that
takes about 2 minutes. If you have not used any
variation of the Físchlár system before from your PC, this means you will have to
download the Oracle Video Player plug-in to play the video (the plug-in is downloadable
from http://www.fischlar.dcu.ie/video/plugin/
… download the file and say YES or
OK to all of the questions the installation process asks). If you require some help
doing this then contact fischlar@computing.dcu.ie and we would be glad to help.
The installation will finish with the message saying "the installation is complete". Usually you don't need to restart the computer. Now you can play videos available on Físchlár.
| Browsing and Playing the News Stories | ||
Once you are logged in, you will see on the left side of the screen the monthly calendar
with the current month at the top (see Figure beside). The days in yellow are the days for which the
evening news are available for story searching, browsing and playback. Notice the archive
starts from 23 April 2003 (bottom of the calendar), to the yesterday (top of the calendar).
| ||
Clicking on any of the days will show the list of that day's news stories on the right side
of the screen (see Figure beside). Each story is summarise with a single image (showing the anchorperson starting
that story), first few lines of the anchorperson's announcement, link to more detailed browsing and
playback option. To play a story, click on "Play this story" link at the end of the story
summary - a player window will pop up and start streamed playback from that story onwards.
To view it in full-screen,
right-mouse click inside the player and select "Full-screen" (or a simple short-cut by Alt-Enter).

| Browsing More Detail | ||
| On the story list (news summary), clicking on the anchorperson image of a story will bring you to the shot-level browsing screen. In this view, all camera shots in that story (reporter, interview, etc.) are browsable along with full closed caption text. Clicking on any of the images will start streamed playback from the clicked point onwards. This allows you not to have to play a whole story if you want to see only a specific part in the story. You will notice thumbs-up and -down icons on this screen, too, so in case you haven't indicated your preference on this story yet, please do so. | ||
| Jumping among the Related Stories | ||
| Below the story detail, you will see "Related Stories" - the list of other news stories in the archive that were considered related to the currently browsed story. Jump to that story's detail, or jump to the news story list on the day in which a story came from, or you can simply play that story. When you jump to another story, you will see it has its own list of Related Stories at the end... in this way, you can browse from a story to another to another. | ||
| Searching the News Stories | ||
You can search news stories by typing in word(s) in the text box on the screen, similar to as
you do with a search engine on the web. The search result will be displayed on the right side
of the screen, showing the list of news stories in the archive that
matched your query term(s). Searching is done on the whole collection
(from 25 April 2003 to yesterday), not on a particular date displayed on the screen.
For a query with multiple terms, see the examples below:
| ||
| Automatic Recommendation of News Stories | ||
If you don't have time to browse throught the archive, just click on the 'Recommended button as seen
in figure beside. This will show you a few personalised news stories selected across the archive that you will
likely to want to see, including recently appeared stories - this is
the result of your thumbs rating (see 'Rating of Stories' above) from which the system has
figured out what stories you haven't seen that would be of interest to you. The recommended
story list will be different for individual users, and at different time of access. Browse and play the recommended stories
as any other stories.
| ||
| Forgot Your Password? | ||
| If you forgot the password and unable to log in, don't worry - simply click on "Forgot Password?" button on the first page. Físchlár system will email you with the password in seconds. It is a good idea to change the password into something more memorable, by clicking on "My Account" button on bottom right corner (you need to log in first to be able to change your password). | ||
| How Does the System Work? | ||
|
The diagram below illustrates at a glance how the system works.
When the evening news is broadcast on TV, it is encoded by the system into MPEG-1 file (standard video
format),
then goes through a series of automatic content analysis techniques, including Shot Boundary Detection,
keyframe extraction, face detection, advertisement detection and news story segmentation.
The result is news story-based searching/browsing features of the system.
